Virtualization
With virtualization existing hardware can be utilised to run multiple Virtual Machines,
Virtualisation is the act of configuring existing hardware into multiple virtual (not actual) machines. The main purpose for this is conservation: in consolidating and utilising hardware to do the job of multiple machines valuable resources are saved, including physical space, the expensive hardware itself and the power it consumes, which can be significant in the case of servers and their cooling systems.
Most computers and servers are operating far below their capacities and the excess memory and processing power can be used to run the software of other appliances such as firewalls and load balancers without having to buy a separate piece of hardware
Appliances which can be run in a Virtual Environment:
• Servers
• Load Balancers
• Firewalls
• WAP Controllers
• Desktops – Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
